Summary
- SK hynix won the IEEE Corporate Innovation Award at the 2026 IEEE Awards ceremony — first Korean company honored for pure memory technology.
- Q1 results: revenue of 52.5763 trillion won and operating profit of 37.6103 trillion won, record highs for a fourth straight quarter.
- Chairman Chey Tae-won said in February that HBM margins exceed 60%.
- HBM debuted in December 2013 via joint research with AMD, supported by tens of trillions of won in long-term R&D investment.
- Analyst consensus projects 2026 revenue of 358.0370 trillion won and operating profit up to 277.7000 trillion won.
SK hynix has won the IEEE Corporate Innovation Award for its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) program — the first time a South Korean company has taken the honor for technology in the pure memory segment, the company announced Sunday.
The award was presented at the 2026 IEEE Awards ceremony in the United States. The IEEE, which counts more than 400,000 engineering and science professionals across 160 countries, selects the Corporate Innovation Award through a review of technical achievement and the technology's impact on industry and society.
What did IEEE actually recognize?
IEEE credited SK hynix for stable mass production of HBM across generations since full-scale development began in 2009, and for its contribution to building the global artificial intelligence ecosystem. The company said it was also the first South Korean firm in the semiconductor field to receive any IEEE award. Reviewers highlighted its role in addressing data bottlenecks that had long constrained AI computing.
The distinction has precedent in Korea's industry: Samsung Electronics won the same Corporate Innovation Award in 2010 for its WiMAX (WiBro) technology — but in networking, not memory.
How did a niche product become the margin engine?
SK hynix's HBM first appeared in December 2013 through joint research with AMD. Early on, the industry viewed it as a niche technology with low profitability, given demanding processes and technical constraints. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won backed long-term investment anyway, providing continued R&D support worth tens of trillions of won, according to the report.
That patience funded proprietary process innovations — through-silicon vias (TSV) and MR-MUF packaging — that turned SK hynix into a key HBM partner to global big tech companies including Nvidia.
Chey put the payoff bluntly at the U.S. Trans-Pacific Dialogue event in February: "This monster chip (HBM) is making our company a lot of money, and our current margin is over 60%." He added: "We need to make more monster chips."
Do the financials support the hype?
The reported numbers are measured results, at least for the quarter. SK hynix posted first-quarter revenue of 52.5763 trillion won and operating profit of 37.6103 trillion won — record highs for a fourth consecutive quarter.
The full-year picture is projection, not result. Securities-industry consensus forecasts cited in the report put annual revenue at 358.0370 trillion won, with operating profit reaching as high as 277.7000 trillion won. If realized, those figures would place SK hynix around fourth globally, ahead of Microsoft (245 trillion won) and Alphabet (240 trillion won). R&D managers should treat that ranking as analyst consensus, not booked performance.
What comes next on the product roadmap?
The company continues to signal product momentum publicly. On April 22 local time, at the TSMC Technology Symposium 2026, SK hynix displayed its HBM4 48GB 16-high product alongside an enlarged 3D model of its internal structure — a reminder that the award recognizes a production track record the company intends to extend into the next HBM generation.
